Genesis 37 - 47
Jacob favored his son Joseph (his wife Rachel's first son),
which angered Jacob's older sons. Out of jealousy, they sold him
to Ishmaelites who brought him to Egypt. Due to his ability to
interpret dreams, Joseph rose to power in Egypt and became a
trusted advisor of the pharoah. He foresaw a famine in the
pharoah's dreams and helped Egypt stockpile their resources in
preparation. When famine hit, the Egyptians were the only ones
prepared and many came to buy grain from them, including Joseph's
estranged brothers. Joseph recognized them, but they did not
recognize him and Joseph put them through trials (including
accusing them of stealing his silver cup, which was placed in
Benjamin's sack) before finally revealing himself as their long-lost brother.
